“Can I control this amp without turning on the tv to see a menu? If so, what would I use - remote from Denon, universal remote, iPhone app? Want to use with home theater but also just inputs from other audio outputs - CD, mp3 - without the big screen on.”

The remote works without a TV, if that is what you are asking. You can also use your smartphone with the Denon remote app. If works well and will let you see selections and functions on it easily.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The Denon universal app doesn't work at all on Android, and has very limited functionality on iOS. To control the tuner you will indeed need the provided remote and the TV turned on to see the band and frequencies. Very disappointing for a company as large as Denon. The only plus controlling the receiver is the Heos app. It does allow access to networked music servers, Bluetooth and online music sources. Volume control is also available from the Heos app.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.To be honest I’m not sure. I’ve made changes to the surround sound speaker levels and Sound situations but the TV was on. There is limited character sets on the front of the Denon. Would recommend you go to the Denon website and intact their tech support. I am happy with the product, I bought two of them.
