• It uses tap water. Just clean with white vinegar once a week to prevent buildup and mold

• The humidifier does not require a filter unless you have hard water. The filter that will work in the warm mist is HS-1932. Yes you can use tap water as long as you do not have hard water then you would be required to use distilled water. Regular weekly cleaning is the way to prevent mineral deposit.
