Splitting a network cable into two requires a router. The router assigns a unique IP address to each computer. Each computer must have a unique address so that the data transmission is delivered to the right computer.

Not sure why mine didn't work but I'm thinking it has to do with the way ethernet is wired throughout my house and the fact that it runs through a hub/switcher located inside the GE security control panel.
