It's very quiet. Set at its top speed, the only thing I can hear is the rush of air movement. At half speed, it creates a gentle breeze with no sound that I can detect. I bought mine specifically to control climate in my home theater, which uses a couple of kilowatt of power. I never notice the noise - if any. I wanted to avoid a separate A/C unit, and the room requires cooling to be comfortable during use. This fan does the job nicely and also blends in with the decor. It's pricey (as are all Dyson products) but I don't think you'll find comparable performance elsewhere.
