Not sure what you mean by two units. You have 2 heat pumps or one heat pump (outside unit) and blower (inside unit). I would guess if you have 2 outside units and one thermostat before then they are both linked. The sensors relay temp of every room they are in, allowing a more precise activation of a/c verses it being cold/hot near the thermostat and kicking on the a/c/heat even though the temp in other areas of the house are fine.
