“Other Epson printers I've used have had failures after a short time (within 90 days). The problem has usually been that it quits printing blue ink. If I purchase the extra warranty, will the printer be replaced with a new one or a refurbished one?”

Buy the warranty and the store would replace it on the spot with a new one or one of equivalent value.. no questions asked.
