• If the black cartridge is low or out of ink, the printer will send a message asking if it is OK to use the photo black cartridge for printing black.

• Yes. Once the black ink is low, the machine automatically asks you if you want to use the photo black instead. So it’s convenient if you need to do some last minute printing.

• It totally doesn't do that. I've got a pile of unused photo black cartridges which I'd love to use, but it refuses to do so. I have to replace the large plain black one instead, every time. I have no idea what dark art would get it to use the photo black.
