I am new to this printer/scanner and had the same problem. Under SCAN SETTINGS, you can deselect AUTO MODE. In SCAN SMART, you can, you can select SCAN AREA. I found the easiest thing for me to do was to place a normal sized piece of blank paper over the smaller sized paper after placing it on the glass surface. The scanner / copier will detect the backing paper and perform as it should. I like to center the document to be copied within the boundaries of the backer sheet, or you could place it on an edge for trimming.

If you are copying the receipt using the Auto Document Feeder, it is possibly trying to detect a larger paper size such as 8.5" x 11". For smaller documents, we always recommend using the scanner glass. It should be able to detect different sizes much better. If you are still running into an issue by using this method, please visit our official Epson Support page to contact our Technical Support team. Regards, Kevin - The Epson Team.
