From my experience setting these up at jobsites across the country, you have to use one or the other. The way that I set this up is to connect via Ethernet. If you are wirelessly connected with the laptop or iPad, you can print to that device through the same router / network. What I have experienced when you have wireless turned on on the printer, it for some reason disables the wired connection. I get a call about it not working and the first question is if they turned on the wireless. Once they disable that, the wired network works.

If your wired and wireless network are being routed from a single device and use the same IP address and subnet, you should be able to connect to the WF-7840 using either wired or wireless devices.
