Up because heat rises and cold air falls. Quietness is subjective. It seems quiet to me but my wife says its a bit loud. I can say this though, this is no more loud than any other AC this size.

But let's say you just got home and it's 87 degrees in your room and you're sweating. You're going to want the cool air to blow forward where you are sitting or laying down for immediate coolness. Of course this is wifi controlled from your phone so you can always turn this on before you go home anywhere in the world.
