“This 8000 BTU AC is 18 1/2 " wide, why does it require a 23" opening? If there are side brackets that make it wider, why can't they be removed?”

• It will fit in A 22 inch window. You can if you want remove one side panel if your window is smaller than 22 inches

• They come off of the air conditioner. If you don't need them just don't put them on.
