“A previous post says it requires a 30" gap between counter tops. The specifications say the width is 28.4". Why would it not fit inside a 29" gap?”

Hi Angler! In researching, we were able to see the width for this model is 29-7/8" and the minimum cutout width is 30". We recommend following the Installation dimensions for proper installation. Hope this helps! -Thanks!-
