“In most cabinets the interior space is wider than the front cutout dimension by an inch or so on each side. Does the appliance rely upon this for cooling or prevention of heat transfer or can you reduce that space to say a 1/4 inch on each side?”

I do not know specifically. Our cabinet is about an inch wider in the interior space than the opening. Both the oven and microwave have vents on the front to disperse the heat. Our previous unit had been in place for 23 years and we never had a heat problem with the cabinet.
