A:Answer You don't have to have a subscription for the gps to work but without a subscription the SOS rescue feature, the communication by text, the tracking and location features won't work so what's the point in getting an InReach. If you want something you can navigate with that actually has a usable map without any of the rescue or communication features get an Oregon or other GPS. You can get a monthly subscription and only pay for the months you'll be in back country out of cell range. The subscription is cheap insurance you'll be found or can get help if you get in a jam off the grid.
