It is waterproof and would be fine in the ocean and it has a very good GPS unit that works automatically in swimming mode -- so I don't see why it wouldn't work in open water. It will use GPS to get your location to within a few feet, and is more accurate than other watches that don't use GPS. I do know that GPS does use a lot of battery life, and you'll need to charge it more often. I think (but don't recall) that you'll get about 8 hours of constant GPS tracking with a full charge.
