Short answer is yes. We have this installed in this way -- see attached picture. Make sure that the width of the cavity is no less than 22.5 inches (ours is 22.5 inches). When you open the door, it needs clearance to the left of the microwave. I was initially concerned about heat buildup to the point where I installed a little exhaust fan at the back of the cavity (exhausts out the side of the cabinet). The fan turns on when the temperature at the back is >100 F. It's never turned on, so in hindsight I wouldn't have done this as it it is not necessary.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The instructions say 3 inches on each side and 1 inch from the back. So no.

We do not recommend installing them in tight spaces, like a cabinet. Countertop microwaves need adequate air clearance on each side, the rear and the top to function properly. This allows good circulation for the intake and discharge air vents. Allow 3" of clearance on both sides and the top and 1" clearance in the rear. The front edge of the microwave (measured at door) should sit at least 3" or more back on the counter or shelf to avoid accidental tipping. If located on the counter near a range, we recommend locating it at least 2 ft away. Do not place near or over a heat source. Select GE Appliance microwaves are Built-In Ready. A matching trim kit (sold separately) is required to install the unit as a Built-In Microwave.
