Hi BC - Thanks for your interest! Model JES1657SMSS is intended for coutertop use only. This model is not equipped with a built-in vent or exhaust. It does have an interior light. If you will be installing a microwave above a cooktop or range, choose a GE Over-the-Range Microwave. Check out GE® 1.6 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave Oven Model #: JVM3160RFSS. This model is equipped with cooktop lighting and two-speed, 300-CFM venting system to remove smoke, steam and odors. Keep in touch at GEAppliances.com. Sue

This is a counter top unit, not a built in unit that is mounted over a stove. Inside there is a light.

Yes, there is a built in vent on the left side of this unit and a light as well.
