During installation, I asked the same question and there are some precautions you should take to prevent a smell or build up of mold. After washing for the day (not after each wash) leave the washer door open to allow it to dry completely.. I take the extra step of giving a quick wipe in the rubber fold on the door. The drum is very spacious. I have a family of three and the only time I filled it up was when I washed a whole lot of bedding.

Ft. Rest assured, you should not experience and issue with odors or mold with proper maintenance. The washer is equipped with a "Basket Clean" cycle. To clean the interior of the washer, select the Tub Clean feature on the control panel. This Tub Clean cycle should be performed, at a minimum, once per month. This cycle will use more water, in addition to bleach, to control the rate at which soils and detergents may accumulate in your washer. We suggest to view the complete details on pages 12-13 of the Owner's Manual at the following link. Also, be sure it is properly installed. If the drain hose is pushed too far into the drain stand pipe, it can siphon drained water back into the washer causing a musty odor. We recommend clipping the hose to the side of the stand pipe so this does not occur. See the following link regarding odors: http://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=22820 - Also, check out GE® 7.5 CU. FT.
