Hi Sheri- This is Sue at GE Appliances. The washer features Precise Fill (or Auto Load Sensing). Precise Fill allows the washer to determine the optimum water required to wash the items in the basket. Precise Fill senses the load during the water filling portion of the cycle to determine how much water is needed. It also features Deep Fill option. Customize your water-fill levels with just the touch of a button. Add a little extra or fill the tub to wash the way you want. Both. If you do nothing, the machine senses the weight of the load and adds the "correct amount" of water accordingly. If you find this is not enough water (which is usually the case), there is a Deep Fill button that allows you to add more. See the instruction manual for details.

You have the ability to increase the amount of water But the machine will default to what it considers the proper amount

The machine selects the water depth.
