Hi Sophia - Thanks for your interest in GE! We are happy to address your concern regarding heat transfer. It is normal for a cooking surface (griddle, grates) to be warm, or even hot to the touch when cooking. This is especially true when baking or broiling for an extended period of time. On freestanding gas ranges, the oven is usually vented up through the backsplash and heat from the oven is directed downward toward the cooktop. Also, heat from surrounding burners can heat the griddle or optional grate so never place any items on the griddle when it is not in use. Keep in touch at GEAppliances.com. Sue
