No it does not. The range I replaced was a Frigidaire and the steam did run upward and come out the control panel as you have mentioned. This GE range/oven does not do any of the bad things that the Frigidaire did. I have broiled, baked at 475-500 and there has been no steam visible coming out like it did in the Frigidaire. I also did not like the ruined finish on my panel and there is nothing that would clean or fix it. My Frigidaire oven door also changed color like the panel did. I do recommend this GE range. It cooks and bakes much better than the Frigidaire ever did.

The heat/steam is directed downward from under the backsplash (control panel). This will cause that area of your cooktop to feel warm. Reset assured this design has not affected the finish on the range.
