We have this same problem. We have had ours for about 4 months. It worked great for a few months and we never ran out of ice. Now it gets about a quarter of the way full and goes into defrost most. Huge pain!

Eventually it starts making ice again. Can someone confirm if there is a bad batch of icemakers? People I know that bought same unit last year never have problems.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.This happened to mine out of the box. After a day of trying to figure out what was going wrong the following seemed to have help: 1. Make sure the line from the accessory tank is flat. If you pull the accessory tank all the way forward (not all the way back) that seems to improve. 2. Make sure there is nothing blocking the air vents on the sides or back. 3. Make sure there is adequate water in the accessory tank. One full accessory tank will be emptied rather immediately after you start it. Not sure, but by filling up a second tank's worth of water I got my first full ice run. Possibly if it doesn't have enough water capacity it tricks itself into parts being frozen and starts defrost mode?

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Apparently there is a bad batch of the GE Opal ice makers. It is a software issue and can be fixed by exchanging machine. GE is very good about honoring their warranties .
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Take off the back panel. Do you see alot of dust on the metal fins (evaportor coil)? Just like you home ac ... a clogged coil will not permit proper cooling. So, blow out the dust (don't bend the soft metal fins). Once dust is cleared ... plug it in. Wait 20 minutes to see if ice is being produced before putting the back panel on again.
