• A:Answer Yes you can put the tank on either side of the ice maker. The tank itself has a pretty strong magnet at the top and bottom it seems like that holds it steady against the ice maker.

• A:Answer The side tank is optional. It will require a lot more attention that way, but it can function without it. I find that my family of 4 goes through about a gallon of distilled water a day.

• A:Answer The unit comes with instructions on how to clean, but there is a clean and a descale. When sanitizing, you basically do a clean with some bleach and then clean 3 more times with clear water to rinse. There is a touch sensitive button on the face to initiate cleaning. Hold that button to descale.

• A:Answer The newest ones are louder than the original Opal and the earlier generations of Opal 2.0. The latest design has a redesigned and improved radiator (including a removable and washable air filter), but the new fan (on while making ice only) is louder. I wish they would have used much quieter fan, e.g. what's available for PC cooling. Of course, the sound of ice dropping in the bin could be argued as noisy, but that's a welcome sound.

• A:Answer Newer units pop on the cleaning light on an hours-of-use schedule. I believe it is about a month for cleaning now. I've owned three of these now all the way back to the original Opal, and the eventual failure will be due to calcium build-up if you don't clean regularly. The aggressive cleaning messages and enhanced cleaning instructions (from previous models) is definitely there to help address that #1 failure mode.

• A:Answer Bin full of ice - no refrigeration, but it is a bunch of ice in a bin that's tucked into the unit, so melts relatively slowly. The bin has drains right back into the reservoir below, so eventually the unit will sense the low ice and will kick back on and will start remaking the ice. You could just let it sit there making / melting / making / melting for days.
