First it gives you an alert sound and speaks to you saying "there is smoke in the kitchen", and you can silence it from your cell phone. However if you are not home to respond to the alert it will sound the alarm. One thing you should be aware of is that sometimes detectors respond to high humidity levels, so if you are boiling water on the range, and the detector is too close, the steam from the water could be setting it off. If possible you might want to try moving your current detector further away from the range to see if it reduces the number of false alarms.
