You don't need an external source to watch stuff you can get all the apps you need right on the device and it has Google cast so really does what chrome cast does and a whole lot more.

With a nexus streaming player connected to the tv it displays the apps on the tv and u can use the included remote to navigate

With a chromecast you use the apps on your phone to project to the tv. So you have to cast from phone to tv

Nexus has apps that can be loaded to it along with casting ability. Chromcast can only cast. Big size difference.
