“I read here you need to be within range to connect via WiFi to a phone or tablet - how far is that range? Does it need to be on you? What if it is on the beach and you are in the water, etc.”

The wifi connect does not work when the camera under water. As far as range, it works from a good distance away. I would say mine works up to around 50 feet. It's similar to connecting your phone to a Bluetooth speaker and walking away from the device.
