“A Best Buy employee opened a box for me so I could inspect the product, and I noticed it had a very toxic smell. Does the toxic smell remain or dissipate over time? And why does it smell so bad if this is supposedly made out of silicone?”

It's most likely the desiccant the manufacturer puts in the box to discourage moisture.....you'll be fine.

the smell dissipates completely and it does a great job

I have the same item it's like a new car smell over time it will fade away mine has already started smelling owned and used just like a new car smell eventually it fades with time
