You can definitely add your own pictures. I don't think (85% confidence) wifi is required for art mode but I haven't tried disconnect it.

The Art Mode can be switched on upon initial setup once CanvasTV is powered up. Once the feature is turned on, it will activate automatically when the TV is powered off. The user can also set the amount of time Art Mode stays on before it turns off.
