When this happens you have to turn off the unit to allow the ice to melt and then remove the filter. In reality the unit should not be icing up. Usually this is a signal that something is wrong with the unit. I called about this for another dehumidifier brand and they advised me to set the humidity to 55 percent. What this does is allow the compressor to run less frequently and maybe avoid creating ice, which it shouldn't do anyway. Plus your really want humidity in the 45-50 percent range. Icing is only supposed to happen if the surrounding area is cool, say less than the high 40s. Some even have heaters, which deice to prevent buildup. So in a properly working unit this shouldn't happen unless you have it set very low humidity and the compressor runs constantly and there's no deicer.
