“Installation instructions emphasize 'power off'. I'm curious, instructions for RTH9585 emphasize 'power off' during install. If I later decide to remove the control from its base plate for any reason, must I also turn off power?”

Hi CupertinoCA, if you remove the face plate to make any wiring changes we do recommend turning the power off for your system. If You are removing the face plate to check information from the back, taking a picture of the wiring or reset the Wi-Fi connection you don't need to turn the power off before but we do recommend changing the mode on the thermostat to Off before removing it.
