You should be able to toggle on and off the keyboard backlighting using the f key alone, without the fn being depressed. Once it is on, it should stay on. If you continue to experience issues with the backlighting, contact us t support.hp.com

I have experienced several things one is when battery life starts getting low this happens and the mouse freezess up and you can't do anything. I 'm not too happy with mine. Wish you the best with yours but it's a little slower then i expected as well.
