It's possible. I only know of a way on Windows. First you have to set the HP monitor as your main display. Go here to get the full instructions, https://appuals.com/how-to-change-the-primary-monitor-on-windows-10/. Then you have to change the "close lid" settings in Windows. Go here, https://www.dummies.com/computers/pcs/how-to-change-what-closing-the-laptop-lid-does/ When you have done these things, then you can dock your laptop and close the laptop display. Your laptop will not shutdown, and it will display on the HP monitor.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You should be able to turn on everything that is connected to the docking station when pressing the power button. It will depend on the particular model purchased, but most do it right out of the box. Instructions can be found in the manufacturers website, and it should explain how the device works, capabilities, etc. If it is a "Port Replicator" you may need to turn the laptop ON to be able to use the external monitor. If your laptop runs Windows just press the windows logo and letter P key at the same time and choose from the available projection options (Second screen, Duplicate, Extend...). Enjoy.
