Little known fact, every time you print in black, the printer uses cyan (blue) ink as well. So even if you put just black, it still wastes your color ink

No you do not. However, if there is any color in what you are printing, make sure you set the print quality to "grey scale". This will override the color and change it to black. Otherwise it may look strange instead.

No, you will get a message telling you the color ink is low, it will still print. Of necessary set printer properties to print black only. then it will print with low/empty color cartrides

I think you can get by with only replacing the black ink. You may have to go into printer set up and change settings to say only print in black

Never replace cartridges until they actually fail to print. Do color print tests to check also.
