Yes, this laptop can support 32 GB of RAM. The maximum RAM depends on the Operating System. Windows 10 HOME can address (point to) up to 128 GB of RAM. Windows 10 PROFESSIONAL and ENTERPRISE can address up to 2 TB. This model (AE) is specifically made for Best Buy, so you can't customize it. If you want to max the RAM for a laptop, you would customize with 2 x 64 GB modules and order on the HP website. Technically, it has 2 HDD slots because the Optical Drive (DVD-Writer) is a drive bay. You could replace it with another drive.

I has a 3.5" 1 TB hard drive and has another small slot for an M.2 2280 ssd. I just put Samsung ssds in both. And 2x16GB is the RAM max -- and I don't know an answer to using on one slot (but I think that's likely a "No").
