I've owned HP printers for 20+ years. This is my first HP laptop. Ten years ago, you couldn''t beg me into an HP laptop. But times change and HP has radically upped their game. The Envy has made a convert outta me. First, as a hardcore film buff with a vast collection of physical media, a built-in optical drive was essential. Check. I travel on business and sometimes take night flights, so a backlit keyboard is vital. Check. Under the hood, this laptop has quad-core processing off an 8th generation i7 chip plus 16 gigs of RAM, which in practical terms means it's fast as a jackrabbit. This baby handles photo and video editing with ease, no sweat. I will probably never fill up the terrabyte-sized hard drive. The hi-res screen is beautiful and fatihfully reproduces millions of colors. This laptop has specs I'm accustomed to seeing on models twice as expensive. For context, I've burned through 3 Asus laptops in 5 years and had finally gotten fed up with their twitchy performance after a year or so and sudden deaths, though I like the design and ergonomics. I'm an HP evangelist now. This is an ideal laptop for a home business. Still light enough for portablility to the coffee shop or client meetings, though I do recommend a protective neoprene sleeve to tote around the laptop safely. One final caveat -- for briefcase users, you might want to measure your case, as this 17.3-inch laptop fits my leather briefcase snugly though just barely. Overall, this is a solid piece of equipment and I am delighted I didn't have to spend 2-3 times as much for comparable performance. Highly recommended by someone who pushes laptops to the limit.

    Complete Junk

Wanna know why this series is called the "Envy" series? It's because you will Envy everyone else that has a laptop that functions properly. I purchased one for my wife as a gift and sadly I knew I probably shouldn't have. The only plus is the i7 chip but it is bogged down with so much bloat it doesn't matter. Cheap components and massive issues with internet connectivity it is laughable that they call this a "business laptop". I have extensive experience with computer software and hardware and should have known better but it is a known brand so I bought it for her thinking that it can't be completely horrible and she will enjoy it more than a lesser known brand (even though the lesser known brand would be better.) I was wrong. It is terrible. The landing pad that you use (or attempt to use) to move the cursor, right click, left click, etc., is quite possibly the worst thing ever designed on a computer. It is slow and rarely will connect to the internet. Yes, I have spent a lot of time working on this computer to remedy some of these issues but I have yet to resolve them and am doubtful I will be able to without a tremendous about of time, effort and possible component changes. It is basically a $1,000 paperweight. It does nothing well or efficient. I have other laptops that are many years older with inferior spec sheets that smoke this thing. Sadly, at the same time I also purchased a new HP laptop for my daughter. she has many of the same issues on hers as well. What are the odds. Now there will be people that will point the finger at the operating software but it really isn't. I can explain why but this is already getting long. There are MANY better systems out there for less money. Sometimes you can get away with the old "name recognition" thing but with HP that just isn't the case. I stopped buying their printers many years ago so I guess I will no longer gamble on any of their products because IT IS a gamble. So if you want to "Envy" people with a working laptop go ahead and buy one of these paperweights. HP, don't bother with your scripted response I'm not interested, and MAC people don't even get me started.

Display has a major issue with backlight bleed

After doing extensive comparisons at half a dozen Best Buy stores over the past two weeks, I bought this laptop. No sooner did I start it up then I realized I was going to have to return it. As soon as the boot up process reaches a black screen there is massive backlight bleeding in all around the edges. I tested it full screen with YouTube videos as well as a DVD and verified that the display is incapable of showing a pure black screen without all sorts of light seeping in from the edges. This is a major quality control failure, which now turns into a hassle as I have to go back to the store and try and get my money back unless I can find an acceptable alternative.

I consider this HP Envy a true workhorse of pc's, especially for those of us who need it for home as well a work. I am a college professor with blended/hybrid classes. That means that a portion of the class is taught in a classroom in person, and the other half of it has intricate online components. Oftentimes, I work with 4 different browsers / servers as well as online texts and work books. I need easy and fast access for my work, plenty of storage space & the ability to organize it well. This particular HP also has a number-pad next to the keyboard......a must for putting accent marks on foreign words since I teach English along with modern languages. On the personal level, there is nothing I can't access with speed and efficiency. I'm replacing a former Envy that I had, and it will now become my backup to this lightning fast powerhouse. Definitely a win-win!! ** And Thank You Best Buy for your price matching policy. This went on sale for 200$ less than my purchase price and they easily refunded me the 200 + tax. Make that a win-win-win !!

    Some times very slow

    Posted

This machine has a lot going for it. The screen is big and bright and touch screen. The keyboard has a backlight that is easily turned on and off. It is even one of the few machines that still comes with a built in dvd drive. Under normal use, browsing and running only one app, the machine is fine. The big problem comes when you are doing updates. Like most machines, the version of windows on it was out dated and needed to be upgraded. The process of the available upgrades completing took 5 hours. While anything was downloading or updating, the machine was too slow to be useable. My desktop ran the same updates in less than an hour. I'm not sure what the bottleneck is here. It has a new I7 processor, 16gb memory so that shouldn't be the problem. It might be the hard drive is the problem. An SSD instead of the hard drive might have helped but who knows. The defrag I did on the hard drive after all the updates were done took over 3 hours. I am hoping the machine does better under normal use but getting it from out of the box state to useable state was a long, show, frustrating process.

I was in need of a new laptop urgently since my current one died and couldn’t be repaired. This HP was on sale which was a positive. PROS: large display, great graphics, right side number pad, backlit keys, came with Win10, 1 yr. Office 365 and internet security software, 3 USB ports and sound system is great, Bluetooth works seamless with easy installation of devices. CONS: difficult to find a reasonable backpack to carry it in, heavy not light on the lap, no keyboard button easy access for enabling/disabling the mouse pad (I like to use a separate mouse), touch screen not easily reachable for drawing, writing, etc since this is not a 2 in 1. Overall pleased thus far, only had a few weeks though. Consumer Reports gave it high ratings and looking forward to doing more with it.

I bought this for my adult daughter. She checked reviews for all kinds of laptops and the HP Envy came out on top, so we got it. We took it back two weeks later because she never could get it to hold onto a WiFi connection. When they tried in the store, it wouldn't connect to their WiFi either! So we got another new HP Envy, took it home, and it wouldn't connect either. We took it back to the store, but this time it worked with their WiFi just fine. My daughter really loved the Envy, so we decided we'd take it back home and replace our Apple N router with Apple's new AC router, even though the Envy is supposed to work with ANY router, and if that didn't work we get an Ethernet cable to attach to the Envy and have HP run a diagnostic on it. The AC router came two days later, we hooked it up (which took about 1 minute), and VIOLA! The Envy has worked like a champ ever since. She LOVES it. I'd have given it 5 stars if not for this issue. Fabulous computer!
