Top opens, hinged at rear, much like any other HP printer. Shutdowns? This printer automatically will go to sleep after an (adjustable) delay, but will wake up when anything is added to its print queue via the network.

As for the printer shutting down, there are settings in the printer that allow you to choose if you want your printer to shut off. You can disable this auto shut off feature from the Preferences menu. You can see page 18 on the user manual for instructions on how to turn off this feature.
