From my understanding, no you cannot do that with HP printers.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have a HP C310a printer that has 5 cartridges with 2 being black. One is for photo black and one is for just using black. I have had this printer for 5 years and I now have a problem with it. Looking for a printer that has this feature but can't find one. They don't make this model any more and it looks like I will be stuck with extra backup cartridges. There is one new C310a on the web site but asking over $800 for it. The refurbished ones are around $450. My printer shows "ERROR: THE FOLLOWING INK CARTRIDGE (S) APPEAR TO BE MISSING OR DAMAGED. I did everything possible to get the computer to run but have been unable to. Even put in a new print head. Sure hate to lose this printer because it was one of the best printers I have ever owned, Bought it at Best Buy with a HP Touch Smart computer. Even has an icon on the desktop where you pull a picture onto the icon and it would print. I guess nothing is forever. Rich
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It does print with one cartridge either black or color
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. To save colored ink, I print B&W scans all the time using black only. (If you don't turn off color, all printers dither in some ink from the color cartridge(s))I have also printed photos in black & white (grey scale) by instructing the printer to print grey scale only. If your question is: "Do I have to have a color cartridge installed if I only want to print in black?" I don't know, but I have printed in color only when my black cartridge was completely empty.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. When you go to print they do have a option for black and white I'm sure that would do the trick. I haven't tried to do that just threw the printer of a memory card or scan
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I've not tried that, but I suppose you could default the printer to B/W and leave the exhausted color cartridge in to allow the printer's error messaging to stop.
