I'm not familiar with a iPhone hotspot. Ask HP customer support or Geek. It can be operated solely with a smartphone, but I believe it needs a server and Wi-Fi. The printer finds the Wi-Fi upon setup. Once setup I believe it will print documents from the phone, etc. These likely would include a Word file, photo, email text, etc. (I don't use smartphone) It will copy and make 4x6 reprints from the front view screen. It can scan to email, which might send it to your email on your phone. It would be a lot better to use it with a PC/laptop. When new to set it up, you can use the smartphone. It downloads the current software for your phone and installs it on the computer. But I don't know if it needs Wi-Fi to do so.
