Not that long ago, printers could survive and continue printing without a second cartridge (even if that cartridge went dry). Today, however, due to the damage possibility, all inkjet printers stop working when there is no ink in the other cartridges. You only have to change the one that is low (not all of them). I agree with this idea. It prevents the print head from damage. Simple as that.. I would advise that you keep, at a minimum, a new or used black cartridge around. That's the one that gets replaced the most.
