I am a professional scientist of many years. A sturdy I5 with 12GB RAM is more than sufficient for most professionals and certainly a first year student in science or engineering. Beyond that, the quality and versatility of the design is both aesthetically and functionally appealing. Most any student would be very fortunate to have this as a tool in their academic arsenal.
