Yes, there is a separate slot for a 80mm M.2 SSD. It goes in easily, and I had no problem reinstalling the custom HP load from a backup made to a memory stick. I disconnected the HDD while doing the M.2 SSD installation and afterwards the new drive was the primary boot drive and the HDD was secondary. The only thing to keep in mind is that installing the M.2 SSD requires a single M2x3mm screw to attach it to the motherboard, which is not included in the laptop and doesn't come with the SSD (at least not with the Samsung EVO 960 that I bought). Our local Best Buy doesn't carry the screw, and none of the local hardware stores do either, so ordering it online at the same time you order the SSD is really the least-hassle way to go.
