Has anyone had a problem with the hinges on this laptop? Worried about them breaking from flipping it around a lot. I broke the hinge on my current laptop and its not even a 2-in-1 so I am just concerned. null

I have the same issue. The screen is pulling away from the lid in the corner near the hinge. HP says there is no recall and that it will cost $400 replace the screen. It is clearly a design flaw and HP refuses to take ownership in a poor design.

After 4 and a half months the hinge broke and the screen flops around. Sent it to HP as it was still under warranty, they contacted me back saying "accidental" damage isn't covered and it would cost $625 to repair. Avoid this computer

I have had my HP Envy for 14 months. I mostly use it at my desk, it rarely goes anywhere, and almost never used in tablet mode. Yesterday the screen separated from the back case when I went to close the laptop. The hinges are metal and sturdy, but they are fastened to the flimsy plastic top lid of the unit. (Let's attach a heavy metal hinge to a flimsy piece of plastic with insufficient fasteners!) So when the left hinge broke away from the lid it caused the screen to break away from the lid. So now I have a screen that is completely independent from the lid, can't close the unit, camera no longer lines up, can't transport it anywhere. It still works but who knows for how long. HP says they will be glad to repair this for a mere $460. I plan to throw it in the trash and go get a laptop with a better design. And that should be really easy to find.

HP Envy x360 - The left hinge broke on mine within 6 months and I hardly used it. I was too scared to use it in tablet mode as the hinges didn't feel sturdy enough so I've only used it as a laptop and it still happened. I wish I had of researched the make and model before I bought it as I have found in other forums that it is a common issue in HP computers and I'm sure I even seen a court case bought against HP for this fault.

The lid detached after 17 months. The metal hinge is screwed into a piece of plastic that is not strong enough to support the lid. 

There are some who suggest that I should have done more research before buying that model ( or any HP laptop) but it was recommended by the staff at Best Buy

My HP laptop has a poor hinge design. The hinge tore itself out of the plastic and the screen was detached from the laptop.

The first "help desk" person told me "accidental damage" was not covered. He would not listen that it was normal use and I would have to pay. I called and got a different person and my laptop was fixed under warranty. BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT WORDS YOU USE WHEN YOU CALL.

That was 4 months ago, and the hinges are breaking loose again. There's no way HP does not know about this.

Bought this laptop via a friend who was in USA, after 14 months of use, the display has now been separated from the metallic back

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! It needs to be recalled and should stop being sold. My computer display began separating from the back of the computer after a loud crack/clicking sound. Hinges were bent. I never dropped it and don't use it in tablet mode.

I can't believe HP are saying what they said at the bottom of these complaints. 1 year warranty? I had that and also insurance for accidents. I refused to use my insurance for accidents, as I hadn't dropped it as HP told me. They finally conceded, after trying to charge me. I had only had the laptop a few months when this happened. They repaired it and guess what the same thing has happened again. Same place, this time it's so bad it's cracked my screen and cut my finger. I think a class action would be the way to go with this, unless HP take ownership of the fault and stop blaming their customers because of a defect.

Yes, same issue as everyone else on here. Had the laptop for a year and then crunching noises started coming from the left hinge and small plastic parts started falling out. Screen detached from the casing and is now off center. It is at the point now that the screen is cracked and the top cannot be closed. This laptop is used 99% on a desk and not transported often, I have never dropped or spilled anything on this computer. This laptop was purchased for me as a Christmas gift and was "highly recommended" by the Best Buy staff member. Best Buy may not be responsible for the manufacturing of this terrible HP Laptop, but they are responsible to their customers to replace a $1,000+ purchase. I would not recommend HP products to anyone, and might look at other electronic stores if this is what Best Buy is recommending these days.

Same thing, the screen assembly broke away from the hinge at the bottom right. The design is much too fragile. I rarely even open or close the cover, there was no accidental damage. The material is just too flimsy. I'll never buy another HP. They don't stand by their product even when there is an obvious design flaw.

Hinge will inevitably break in this model and from my experience way before you're ready to move on to a different computer.

While true about the metal construction, this is a deceptive answer. Note the remnants of the 1 mm plastic threading that attaches that metal hinge to the case. It gave out in well under a thousand opens and was never used in tablet mode. The "all metal design" was great for cracking the screen after the screws stripped out though.

Same issues here. 14 months in and fresh off a total screen replacement (stopped receiving power) and the screen separated, then flexed hard enough to crack the lower right corner of glass. Chatted with HP for half an hour and they said since I didn't relay any concerns before the damage occurred, it would need to be a paid service. Not sure how I'm supposed to tell them about a concern I didn't know about. I'm done with HP at this point and will look for something else.

It happened to my HP Envy x360 almost three years in (it will be three years old in February). I was really careful after I saw the screen opening more every time I opened it. I saw that nothing was broken or had fallen apart inside and that the screws on a bracket connected to the hinge and the screen were loose. It seems to be serviceable if you get the service manual of your computer, but it is a bit complicated. For now, I'm using Gorilla Tape to keep the screen from being separated as the hinge operates. It's working great with a little extra care. This is otherwise a great laptop, hope this helps someone.

I have two newer HP laptops that have this same issue. The hinges themselves might be ''all-metal design'' but the cheap plastic points they attach to are not. Once a hinge breaks loose the thin metal bezel support will break also. This is a design flaw not user error. HP needs to repair for free or cover the cost of parts for this fix. Also actually having decent QC to make hinges that dont break would be wonderful. A Lightweight Aluminum base and cover would solve this issue instead of using Plastic parts.

I received a HP Pavilion 15 laptop for Christmas last year. A few months ago, I noticed the screen was popped out and the right lower hinge was sticking out. There is a very cheap piece of plastic holding it in place that broke. I checked online and there are multiple complaints about the same issue. HP is not willing to help fix their defective design problem. I noticed that the newer HP laptops have a long bar attached to the base of the computer now. Too bad they did not do that sooner.

I bought an envy x360 laptop and after 14 months when i opened the laptop i heard a crack noise and the left hinge broke, even the rubber on the down side seems to be coming out even if i never took the laptop anywhere. I contacted the service and they told me that my warrant doesn't cover accidental damage. I bought the x360 in 2018, and, after a life of abject poverty I'd fought to climb out of, I thought it was one of the nicest items I'd ever owned. I was so grateful & excited because I knew that it would be instrumental in keeping me fed. No one used it but me, and it rarely left a secluded table in the MONTH I had it before the hinge broke. I think I may have checked out the tablet feature once. When it happened, it was so sudden (and loud!) that the bottom of the screen cracked, too. I knew it must be a fluke & that the warranty would cover it, & a few days after shipping it to HP in the special box they sent, the CSR I spoke to very sharply informed me that they don't cover accidents or misuse. I burst out crying and explained that that wasn't the case, but he didn't budge - after researching, even way back then, I found that this is the MO, designed to minimize payouts, oc. And LOTS of ppl fall for it or give up. I did not. I exorciated every pro reviewer, posted long, rambling warnings on the HP site, etc, and they fixed it. Finally. It shouldn't have taken all that. It's cruel and inexcusably greedy and corrupt. After that, I was able to put it away (I hated it lol) and only began using it again Jan 1, 2024 for remote work. Yesterday, it broke again. A year and a half of SUPER CAREFUL use is not sufficient.

I bought one in the fall of 2021 and had the bottom left hinge come apart when it was about 7 months old. It was still under warranty. I had to mail it out for service, and they sent me a loaner laptop, but they had it for several months before I got it back. The bottom left touchscreen is'nt sitting flush now, and when I gently press on it, it sounds like it snaps back in, but it does not hold. It is very minor, but I am concerned about the longevity of this device due to these issues. I baby this laptop, and to have these issues has been disheartening. If I had to take this laptop with me back and forth for work or for any reason, I am not sure it would hold together. The function of the computer and visual display is great, it's the construction of it staying together that seems to be problematic. I will not flip the screen back ever since I got it back. I only did that a couple times, and when it broke it was when I was simply opening the top up. I use it at home, with it on my coffee table, and rarely do I move it from that location, so needless to say I was puzzled why it came apart. After I had this issue, I did search online, and a few others have mentioned they have had issues with the hinges too.

I have an i5 of this model with an SD drive I purchased at the end of 2021 with Win 11.   The hinge is not broken on mine but the torque from the hinge on the front and back casing within two inches of the hinge has caused the casing to crack gradually getting larger and I have been using it for 1.5 years - the crack became apparent - on both sides of the front and then underneath.   It's very disappointing for a once great company like HP (that was my opinion) but also I think for a 15.5 inch, the torque from left to right on the case may be too much and it was not engineered to be sturdy.  Too lightweight...I don't know really.  So far the computer works fine and I have extended warranty coverage but it is a big hassle for a relatively newer computer for me.  I may not buy HP in the future.

I have had my HP Envy 360 since 2017 and last year the left hinge got loose, protruded through the bottom left of the screen cracking the screen. The LCD wire is exposed too.

I purchased TWO Envy 360 2-in-1 laptops. They were not mishandled. The lower left hinge broke on BOTH laptops when they were just a few months out of warranty.
My HP customer service experience was dismal - they charge $50 for the privilege of speaking with a service representative, who tell you they will charge you for the repair since it's out of warranty.
I also approached Best Buy, who said they would need to ship it off for evaluation, and would provide a repair price quote within 4 weeks.
If you view HP's Forum (search x360 hinge), then you will see page after page after page of broken hinge complaints.   
HP Envy x360 2-in-1 laptops are not cheap. 
I expected better quality from an HP product.
I also expected better from Best Buy - I previously trusted the products they sell.

I carried my laptop in a padded laptop case.  My 1-year warranty is finished. I always used HP computers/laptops, they all were reliable and served me a long time. This laptop is the most expensive laptop I ever owned because I needed it for my work and trusted HP. I am so disappointed! HP should do a callback on these laptops. There are so many people who complain for the same reason.  I think the replacement of the defective part with the same non-quality part will not solve the problem :(

I bought this laptop in Sept 2017 and in Jan 2021 I just opened the laptop normally (I never use it as a tablet ever) and the hinge snapped inside and separated the screen. I was able to somehow keep it together for a year and 8 months since HP wouldn't do anything about it but in Sept 2022 the hinge finally bust through the screen so it was done for. It's a shame because the actual laptop works fine for being 5 years old!!

I recently had this exact thing happen to me, and I repaired most of it myself. The thing I noticed was that basically all the weight and forces on the screen are put on a thin metal frame piece, which in my case bent and broke. Cost me about $35 for the parts and took about 30 minutes to fix.

Actually the hinges on the X360 are pretty hefty.
It's the plastic mounting inside the back cover that are of poor quality and crack where the hinge attaches, thus pulling the 2.5mm threaded inserts from the plastic.
This happened to my X360 at the 13 month mark, one month beyond warranty. I called HP support and they would not cover it and quoted me $400 plus for repairs.
I fixed it myself for under $100.

I have an HP Envy, I've owned it for 2 years and the left hinge broke, then the right hinge 
 became loose and after a while, the frame of the HP comes loose and I was afraid that the screen

I google searched for hinge problems with my 1 yr. HP laptop, same model. The screens seems to be coming loose and has 1 inch floppy play when open. When I close, back of the computer base separates a little. I pinch it closed, and seems good, until I open again. Stopped closing at night and just shut down. Then I found this site and read most of your feeds. I will NEVER buy an HP product again, after reading all the complaints. I have a HP desktop, computer is in the screen, and the screen is starting to go bad, after 2 yrs. I always had Dell computers in the past, never should have changed. I'll just pay a little more and go with dell next time.

Yes, the hinge on the left hand side is so tight that it wont convert to 360. The screen broke as a result and now I am sitting in my kitchen with an open laptop replacing the screening and searching for a place to buy replacement hinges. I bought this laptop 2 years ago. Such a disappointment!

Yes, I have the same problem in just 6 months. It is clearly a design flaw as I noticed something amiss since Day 1 but could not understand what it was. The lower side of the laptop comes off like it is going to rip off while opening the screen.

YES!!! Huge issues. Factory repair. sent back to HP... only after a SEVERE discussion. HP had a class action lawsuit fled against them in 2015. Clearly, it was a slap on the wrist, as these hinges continue to malfunction. There are complaints all over the internet, yet they have done NOTHING. My factory repair job has just malfunctioned again. I will not be purchasing another HP

It seems like the hinges are not aligned properly. On mine when you open and close the lid, I can feel that the right hinge is not aligned and makes a crackling sound causing the screen to pop out at the right bottom corner. Eventually it cracked the screen and now I cannot even log in with my PIN, I can only login with finger print and once you login screen starts flickering. You can’t do anything with flickering screen. I just send it back to have it repaired. I had purchased extended warranty/care package and was told that it was covered under the warranty. Hopefully I wont have to pay to have it repaired.

Mine started happening about 4 months into usage. It has lead to cracked plastic on both sides, left and right, and now the right corner completely makes it almost impossible to shut. The top is completely too heavy for the foundation, or lack thereof. I haven't had time to figure out how to use my extended warranty, and where to go... costco or UPS it somewhere to some HP location. I work on this computer and don't have backup. I bought an extended warranty.

You should not have any issues at all with the hinges. The computer has a one year warranty which covers the hinges as well. It is an all metal design on the hinge so they should hold up to thousands of uses.
