Our last HP Laser printer allowed us to print black and white even when the colors were low; however, once the colors get depleted- it does stop printing...Keep in mind with the laser printers there are separate cartridges for RGB and B/W

Please try again later.I have set the default printing mode to black and white; does not appear to be using anything other than black toner; my understanding is that inkjet printers which are not used regularly require cleaning cycles which use a lot of ink and its possible that accounts for some of what you were seeing with use of color cartridges even when only printing in black and white; hope this helps;
