My understanding is that your router should be choosing the signal, either 2.4 or 5, due to the workload the router is experiencing at the time of the printer use. I have a tri band router so I am able to designate certain items in my home to run on the 5 as opposed to the 2.4, to ensure the best connection. An example is my Sony 75" 4k HDR tv,that I designated to the second 5ghz band of my router to ensure the best playback from Netflix,Vudu and other apps.
