“Can my daughter use this to do word processing? Can this be used to do word processing right out of the box without having to download any other program?”

It depends on the level of word processing. The computer comes with basic document creation software, but not office. So she can write letters and basic reports for school.

I don't know if it came with a full word processing program, if it did, I immediately uninstalled it in favor of the free word processing and office suite from open office dot org.

This computer does not have Microsoft Office included you will need to purchase it separately.

Yes. I recommend Office 365 (9.95/month, but you can install on up to 5 machines and you’ll always have the latest edition), but there are plenty free options out there that will work just fine (OpenOffice, Google Docs, etc.)
