No... it does not "need" them... that doesn't mean that it couldn't use some. But it does have a speaker in it

I bought this for my parents but have never actually seen the unit as it was shipped to them. But I imagine the model that it does require an external speaker. Most towers do not have sound as it's equipped to most screens. I would suggest either buying a monitor with speakers built in or buy a set and most are relatively inexpensive
