If you’re viewing a standard definition (240p or 480p, 4:3 aspect ratio) then it will require “zoom” in order to fill the 720p, 16:9 aspect ratio LCD panel. If you use a high definition source, then the panel will display the image using the entire screen. A high definition source would be a DVD or BluRay connected via HDMI, or a high definition ATSC broadcast, for example.

The Insignia 24" television has a 16:9 or 1.78/1 aspect ratio that conforms to most television programming created since 2008. If you are watching an older TV program you will likely want to view it in standard format with the black bars on the sides. To cause a 1.33/1 image to fit completely in a 1.78/1 screen will cause all the images to appear stretched sideways and squashed from top to bottom. Not a pretty picture!
