The compressor and fan are located outside the window. The window closes into the U-shaped area of the A/C, keeping the noise outside. This unit has an included steel window mounting bracket, an assortment of hard and soft foam insulation, and a detailed instruction manual. Once installed, it runs quieter and more efficiently than standard types. I bought one for the main living area in our new home, and was impressed with it enough to buy a second for the master bedroom suite. It also qualifies for a $40 energy star rebate!
