The dispenser has a small nozzle on the bottom ours was slightly clogged so I ran a pipe cleaner through the nozzle and fixed the problem. We use a somewhat thick fabric softener so we have diluted the by adding water to the softener bottle, works great. Love this washed .

This is most likely happening in this machine's dispenser in an area that you can't see or get to. As suggested, try pouring hot water through the dispenser. It may take time, but in the mean while use a Downey Ball.
