• It DOES function without the power supply, I have it plugged in and working without the power supply as I type this. The total current of the 4 ports is just limited to whatever the USB port the hub is plugged into can supply (typically 900mA for USB 3.0).

• When you have it plugged into a powered USB port, it does not require the AC power cord. It will charge devices using the power supplied by the USB port.

• I haven't tried it on this one. But, I have seen other powered USB hubs still work without the power supply - but they did not work adequately.
